Sometimes ideas turn up that immediately spark your creativity. Mañana was one of them.
A stick figure drawing from one of Marie-Louise Gustafsson’s sketch-books took on the form of a floor lamp, with its body leaning against the wall.
Mañana means tomorrow in Spanish and the lamp’s laid-back, nonchalant attitude totally communicates chill-out, take it easy, stay cool. The lamp is lacquered in graphite grey to emphasize the feeling of a pencil sketch and has a turnable steel plated lampshade with a large globe bulb to give the feeling of a face.

You can keep letting it irritate the hell out of you. Break your neck tripping over it. Or surrender, hide it behind the skirting board or press it into a groove. But it’s smarter to make friends with the enemy, as so amusingly illustrated by cord light, which turns the cursed flex cord into a simple eye catcher. We probably shouldn’t claim that the lamp conveys a message, but just for fun, how about ‘make peace not war’? From a snake nest of winding cords, this lamp shoots straight up and stands tall on its own. Surprising the eye by challenging the unexpected, the Cord Light is simple, yet characteristic. Korean Designer Wonsuk Cho has designed a series of lights based on the light box commonly used to examine X-Ray film.
These whimsical lights are created by taking X-rays of single incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs. The images are subsequently mounted onto small black boxes which hang from the ceiling and once illuminated reveal their skeletal structure.
The X-Ray lights look particularly striking when placed in a group. Each light ships with 2 x-ray bulb designs.

Based on the spirtual quintessence of the twelve-sided dodecahedron, the designer created The Quin.MGX ceiling light so that the viewer’s eye is led into the sculpture along many swooping paths, leading from triangles to pentagons and back again. The lamplight also follows these paths. But what is most beautiful about the Quin.MGX is the anti-light, the way the surfaces shadow each other, creating a continuum of differently shaded areas casting smooth gradations of light in a spherical matrix that is punctuated by small pure beams.
Time Magazine included the Quin.MGX as part of its Design 100 in 2008.
